Serenity is solid

5 second plot: Earth could no longer sustain the ever growing human population, so humanity jumped ship and looked for a bigger place. Not everything is peaches and cream in this new place. This is the story of the crew of the Serenity, a group of small time hustlers. The ones that only steal from the people that deserve it. But now they are carrying a cargo that is of great value for the big guns. And these big boys want their asset back.

5 second review: The story is solid, the characters and the ideas behind the new world are spectacular and it's a lot of fun. But it's not really top notch stuff special effects wise. And that's a bit of a shame.

Disaster! must have been fun to make

5 second plot: A spoof of Armageddon mostly, but all natural disaster movies in general are put in the mix.

5 second review: It's with puppets, it's not very well done, it's completely over the top but it is very funny from time to time. Heads are chopped off, puppets are having sex, showing their boobs, shitting themselves,... stuff like that.

Memories of Murder is surprisingly free spirited

5 second plot: A serial killer is brutally raping and killing young women in a town in South Korea. A special detective from the big city is working together with the local detectives to find the killer. They have a lot of suspects, but can't find the evidence to link any of them to the crimes.

5 second review: The really clumsy and back to basics ass kicking detective work is often very funny (the way one cop always jumps up and kicks everyone in the face) but at the same time really sad (they also kick the ass of a mentally challenged young fellow). It's a very open minded film. Which I didn't really expect from a South Korean production.

Howl's Moving Castle is stunningly beautiful

5 second plot: Sophie, a shy but very warmhearted  girl gets turned into an old woman by a wicked witch. After that she feels the need to search for a young wizard, Howl. Maybe he can help her with the curse. In the background the kingdom where they all live is going to war.

5 second review: This is a beautiful story and a visually stunning movie. I didn't always get where it was going, but it was still a lot of fun. Wizards and witches... and a walking house. Something you don't see every day. A must see.

Crash is amazing

5 second plot: This movie is a day in the lives of a bunch of very different people that come together one way or another. They are all living in Los Angeles and all of them are either misunderstood or misunderstand themselves. Some get lucky and others don't. Some get another chance to make things right and others don't.

5 second review: This is an amazing movie that builds on an amazing script (Oscar for that). It's also visually stunning. It is beautifully shot (and edited (Oscar for that)). A lot of familiar faces (almost every face you see) and an amazing performance by each and everyone of them. It's one of those movies that will stick with you forever.

Downfall is not exceptional

5 second plot: This is the story of the final days of Hitler and his close followers.

5 second review: I don't really understand why anyone would find this movie exceptionally good. It's not bad, and the horrific story about the war is one that can't be told too often, but not taking the intentional emotional shocks (the killing of the children...) into account, I wasn't overwhelmed by it. Maybe it's because I knew that part of our history already very well.

Hotel Rwanda is almost too good to be true

5 second plot: This is the true story of a hotel manager who rescued over a thousand people (mostly Tutsi) by sheltering them from killing squads (mostly Hutu) in Rwanda in the 1990's.

5 second review: These people were so lucky, it's almost unimaginable. If this weren't a true story, I would hate it because I wouldn't believe it. The actors are amazing and the story is amazing, but it all feels so unreal. Not the killings of course, that can't get any more real. But the whole hotel story.
