Into the Forest is heavy stuff

5 second plot: A father and his two daughters have to survive without electricity in their remote house in the forest when a nation-wide power outage hits their region.

5 second review: The main characters do crazy things no-one would ever do in a situation like theirs. This reminded me constantly that I was watching a movie. It's a heavy drama. It felt like I was watching the movie with a ton of bricks on my shoulders. Well, it's kind of the end of the world so I guess there's nothing light about that.

Equals is not about the sci-fi

5 second plot: Silas lives in an emotionless society. All emotions are regarded as a defect, a disease. But more and more people are getting 'sick'. Silas too. To make things even more difficult: he falls in love with Nia.

5 second review: This movie is all about human relations. It is set in a futuristic world, but we get to see very little of it (too little). Because the story isn't about that. So to enjoy this movie you have to be more into romantic dramas than into science fiction.

Green Room gets fired up eventually

5 second plot: A struggling punk rock band takes on a gig playing for hot headed neo-Nazis led by Captain Picard. They end up fighting for their lives after they witness something they shouldn't have.

5 second review: The set-up takes a its sweet time but when shit really hits the fan this slow burner transforms into a really awesome movie. Awesome meaning: full on carnage.

High-Rise doesn't make much sense

5 second plot: Laing moves into a state of the art apartment building. After a while everyone starts flipping out for no apparent reason. The entire building descends into chaos.

5 second review: I don't very much like these arty-farty, style-above-content wannabees. It's no fun at all, boring and weird above anything else. It didn't make any sense to me at all.

The Invitation asks a lot

5 second plot: Will is going to a dinner party organized by his ex-wife. All his old friends are there. It's sort of a get together. He hasn't seen them in a long time. It's kind of an awkward situation. There is a lot of 'baggage' between everyone. After a while Will senses that something is very wrong.

5 second review: I really had to hang in there with this movie. Because it takes a very very very long time for this story to come to its conclusion. And this very long time is filled with awkward, sad, emotional, weird moments. And I'm not too fond of those. But the conclusion is solid. Very solid.

Hardcore Henry is one hell of a ride

5 second plot: From the minute Henry (the guy from the title) wakes up (without memories or speech) he is under attack. He seems to be some sort of half-human, half-cyborg supersoldier. And someone really wants him captured (or dead). But he's not about to let that happen.

5 second review: This movie is entirely shot from the point of view of Henry. A shaky-cam headache is practically guaranteed. But it's worth it. It's a roller coaster ride from beginning till end. It's action packed, bloody, intense, fast paced, original and very very hardcore indeed.

The Girl in the Photographs has got one major flaw

5 second plot: Colleen is stalked by someone who leaves pictures of mutilated women for her to find. The cops don't take it seriously. They think it's just make-up and someone's way of asking for attention. But we know that there's a serial killer at work and that he's closing in.

5 second review: For a low budget horror movie this is actually not bad. There certainly are talented people at work here. But there is one thing that's very wrong, and that's the casting of Kumar as a stuck up photographer. My god, is he annoying. He almost single-handedly destroys everything that's good about the movie.

Eye in the Sky is a mighty tense thriller

5 second plot: A joint American-British mission to capture Kenyan extremists turns into an drone strike assassination mission with a little girl in the blast zone.

5 second plot: If you would like to know more about modern warfare, you should really see this movie. But you will not like what you are seeing. You can say what you want about this story and the fact that the main goal is to make a statement about modern warfare, but Gavin Hood delivered a mighty tense thriller. And hats off for Helen Mirren for taking on a role like this.

Emelie is fucked up

5 second plot: When mom and dad go out on a lovely date, the kids get a babysitter from hell.

5 second review: If you have kids: don't go near this movie. Especially when you sometimes have a babysitter come over. The movie's not bad. The actors do a great job. But the story is too fucked up and sad for my personal taste. I'm not too fond of seeing little kids being tormented.

The VVitch: A New-England Folktale is not very uplifting

5 second plot: In old New England a god fearing family has to try and build a new life far away from their community after they are banned from it. They build their new farm next to a forest. They don't know that an evil witch lives in that forest. And she's not too fond of her new neighbors.

5 second review: At a certain point in the movie I was afraid it was going towards a dead end. You know, you're expecting something big, but it never comes. Boy, was I wrong. This film certainly delivers on its promises. If you're looking for an uplifting night out, stay away from this one. If you're looking for a disturbed dark fairy tale, you're in for a treat.

Nina Forever is something you don't see every day

5 second plot: Get this. Every time Rob has sex his dead girlfriend reappears all smashed up and covered in blood (she died in a car crash). His new girlfriend Holly is shocked at first (who wouldn't) but tries to make the 'situation' work.

5 second review: How in earth does one get to make a movie with a plot summary like that? Imagine being the one that has to pitch this idea. The movie is not bad but it relies entirely on this crazy plot. And there's just not enough material to fill an entire movie with. So towards the end it spirals a little bit out of control.

400 Days keeps you guessing

5 second plot: Three men and one woman go in an underground vessel for 400 days to simulate a long space voyage. They were told that there would be obstacles and problems that they have to overcome. But after a while they're not sure anymore of what's real and what's not.

5 second review: It's not a big spectacle, it's not really a great story and it's not really that interesting. But you will be guessing until the very end. So I... ahum... guess that's pretty well done. However. I have to say the ending disappointed me. That's not a cool feeling after sitting through a not-that-interesting movie for an hour and a half.

A Perfect Day is not a comedy

5 second plot: We follow a group of aid workers in the Balkan, during the time when it was a war zone. They try to get a dead body out of a well, but they run into one problem after another.

5 second review: The tone of the movie is very lighthearted and the dialogue is often funny (Tim Robbins is amazing). But that doesn't mean that this is a comedy.  This lightheartedness just increases the devastatingly sad feeling you get while watching people like you and me lose everything they have because of a war they have nothing to do with.

Intruders is interesting

5 second plot: Three men break into the house of Anna, a young troubled woman suffering from agoraphobia. Because of her fear, she can't leave the house. Her only option for survival is to fight back.

5 second review: I was expecting a big slasher horror movie, so I was a bit disappointed that there's only a little bit of slashing going on. But it is a very interesting plot, I have to give it that. It's not something you see every day. It's nice to see someone break the 'rules' of the genre every once in awhile.

Baskin is pretty nasty

5 second plot: When five cops respond to a call for back up they end up going into an abandoned house. Where they make a horrible discovery.

5 second review: It's pretty awesome how this apparently normal (Turkish) cop movie turns into cannibal holocaust all of a sudden. This is only for horror-fans with a strong stomach. It's a bit too nasty for my taste. But I'm always glad people are still making these hardcore horror slasher fests.

Joy is quite the struggle

5 second plot: Joy is the central figure in her family. She's holding everyone together like superglue: mother, father, ex-husband, kids, grandmother, half-sister. Her life is a soap opera. On top of taking care of everyone she invents stuff. And now the time has come to think big.

5 second review: What is it with Jennifer Lawrence? How can she be so great in everything she is in? It must be some kind of secret superpower. Almost all the other characters in the movie annoyed the crap out of me. I felt like punching her family in the face myself. I guess that's the whole idea but it's not really my idea of a fun night out.

Daddy's Home doesn't always bring it home

5 second plot: Brad is a stepdad of two and his big dream is for his stepkids to treat him like a real dad. But then the real dad comes into the picture. And he seems to want Brad out.

5 second review: It's a typical Will Ferrell movie. That means lots of awkward jokes that keep going and going and going for way too long. It's good that Mark Walhberg is there to take the edge off a little bit. It's not all awkwardness this time, there's also some slapstick. It's crazy over the top road runner slapstick, but somehow that works.

Point Break is not all bad

5 second plot: A new FBI recruit with an adventurous past goes undercover to solve a series of crimes that seem to be connected to an extreme sports challenge.

5 second review: The extreme sports are awesome. The nature is breathtaking. Some characters aren't bad. But Keanu is irreplaceable (who would have thought). The story is bull-shit. They should have made an original story instead of trying to make a new Point Break.

The Revenant is tough as nails

5 second plot: It's a tough life being a frontiersman in America. Hugh Glass is a guide for a group of hunters. They get attacked by Native Americans and have to run. While on the run Hugh is attacked by a bear. He is in bad shape. They try to save him but eventually he is left for dead. He miraculously pulls through. But he will still have to fight hard to survive.

5 second review: This is one gritty survival/revenge movie. Life was so tough back then, it's amazing anyone made it. The action sequences are mind blowing. The bear attack is one of the best action sequences I have ever seen. The survival story works up to a point (how much can one man take), but there's something off about the revenge part. It doesn't feel right.

The Hateful Eight is awesome

5 second plot: Not long after the Civil War a group of strangers gets stuck with each other while sheltering from a nasty blizzard. Two of them are bounty hunters on their way to town to collect a lot of money. As these strangers get to know each other, they start getting paranoid and piss each other off.

5 second review: Well, I guess he did it again. Brilliant scripting, beautiful cinematography, perfect cast and an amazing eye for detail. I had a lot of fun watching these guys (and woman) trash talk and shoot their way through it like there is no tomorrow. But I must say QT takes his sweet time laying it all out.
